Ascent of Mount Elbrus
Mount Elbrus is the highest point in Europe and Russia in the mountain system of the Caucasus. The mountain has two prominent summits - East (5621 m) and West (5642 m). The distance between them in a straight line is 1500 m.
In the distant past, both peaks were part of the crater of one volcano, towering at least 1000 meters above the modern level. But a few hundred thousand years ago, a powerful seismic explosion destroyed the upper part of the volcano and formed the shape of the mountain that we are used to see today - a gentle sloped two-headed dome with a deep saddle between its summits.
Exploring Mount Elbrus
- 1829 – the first successful ascent to the Eastern Summit of Elbrus - as part of a scientific expedition organized by the Russian Academy of Sciences under the leadership of General G.A. Emmanuel;
- 1874 – climbing to the higher Western Summit, accomplished by English climbing team led by F. Grove;
- 1890 and 1896 – ascents to the both Summits of Mount Elbrus undertaken by the military Russian topographer A. Pastukhov;
- 1910 – Swiss climbers O. Hoog and C. De Ramm climbed both Summits of Mount Elbrus as part of a single ascent, completing the so-called "Cross of Mount Elbrus";
- 1942 – German mountain military troops under the command of H. Grott, during the military operation in the Caucasus (WWII), hoisted fascists flags on the both Summits of Mount Elbrus;
- 1943 – German flags were removed by Soviet mountain climbers, the flags of the USSR were hoisted on the tops;
- 1967 – the first annual record of climbing the both summits of Mount Elbrus: 2536 climbers.
The mountain accessible to everyone
Starting from the 20s of the XX century, ascents to Elbrus began to be more and more widespread. And to this day, three main factors contribute to this:
- Convenient transport accessibility of the mountain;
- Relative technical ease routes (by climbing standards);
- Developed related infrastructure (hotels, camp sites, cable car).
The presence of these components is an absolute advantage of mountain tours to Elbrus, making them extremely compact in terms of time. In addition, you do not need a lot of gear, also for the standard route there is no need to carry a heavy backpack. A stable phone and internet connection to the very top of the mountain allows you to share your impressions of the trip with your friends at any time.
There are many ways to go up Mount Elbrus.
MCS AlexСlimb Mountain Climbing School offers to you the following routes to Mount Elbrus:
- Elbrus West Summit from the north. The main part of the climb goes along the path of the first conquerors of Elbrus - the expedition of General Emmanuel in 1829. Since then, little has changed. The Martian landscapes, bizarre natural formations “rock mushrooms”, the flat plateau “German airfield”, a silver spring opening in July, warm mineral baths - all that amazing beauty is not yet spoiled by civilization. If you love the mountain purity and are ready to sacrifice comfort for a real adventure - this mountain tour is ideal for you. Duration of the tour starts from 6 days; the price is from 35,000 rubles / person.
- Elbrus West Summit from the south – the most popular and easiest climbing route. Its popularity is due to the optimal infrastructure - the availability of maximum tourist services within walking distance - hotels, chair lift, cable cars, snowmobiles and so on. Duration of the tour starts from 5 days; the price is from 30.000 rubles / person.
- Elbrus West Summit from the west – the most rarely visited route, due to its length and technical complexity. That is a good choice for experienced and physically trained climbers. Ascent route goes by the western slopes, bypassing the gendarme "Utug". There is no infrastructure on this route, the mountain nature is totally untouched by civilization. Duration of the tour starts from 8 days; the price is from 55,000 rubles / person.
- Elbrus East Summit from the east – is another rarely visited route. Climbing does not present technical difficulties, but requires a good physical shape. Participants will have to face the real difficulties of an alpine expedition - with self-carrying cargo, setting the high-altitude camps, overnights in the tents, cooking their own meals. Duration of the tour starts from 7 days; the price is from 40,000 rubles / person.
- Bezengi - Elbrus West. This variation of climbing tour involves adding to the standard block of the Elbrus West Summit ascent the acclimatization part, which is held in the legendary Bezengi region - the most technically interesting, safe and comfortable mountain region in the North Caucasus. The duration of the tour starts from 11 days; the price is from 55,000 rubles / person.
- Bezengi - East Elbrus. Another variation of the Elbrus East Summit climb with a preliminary acclimatization block. That tour will greatly facilitate the task of the main ascent, not only making higher the chance of success, but also increasing the safety level, as the altitude gain during this schedule is much more smooth than in the most standard short programs. Duration of the tour starts from 11 days; the price is from 55,000 rubles / person.
- Kazbek + Elbrus – two epic ascents in one mountain tour. The reason of the majority of all the unsuccessful attempts to climb the highest peaks in Europe is lack of acclimatization. But after climbing Mount Kazbek (5033 m) you can get very good preparation for the following confident achievement of the Summit of West Elbrus (5642 m). The duration of the tour starts from 12 days; the price is from 70,000 rubles / person.

From the very beginning of our activity, here nearly 16 years, the first Principle of work of School of mountaineering and rock-climbing of MCS AlexClimb is the Safety Priority. On the basis of this Principle all process of training is based, all programs and rounds are developed and carried out only within this main principle. We consider that at professional approach to development of programs, at personal discipline and correctly put motivation - occupations by mountaineering and rock-climbing are COMPLETELY safe. And from the return - all troubles and accidents in our sport come from nonprofessionalism, from ignorance or neglect by elementary standards of safety, from irrational motivation, from revaluation of own forces and opportunities. All these prerequisites we COMPLETELY EXCLUDE in our work - ours Rock-climbing, Ice climbing and Mountaineering are based on one Principle - the Safety Priority. In rock-climbing, mountaineering and ice climbing, the Priority of Safety of MCS AlexClimb-is your personal security and comfort irrespective of, than we are engaged - we train muscles and we work technology of the movement in the sports hall and on the rock climbing wall, we make the way through snowstorm to top or we relax on golden sand of the Caribbean beach after hot day of trainings on rocks. The Safety priority - the main credo of School of mountaineering and rock-climbing of MCS AlexClimb.
AlexClimb Rule #2 - Leave No Trace
Closely interacting with Nature, working with the active programs in mountains, woods, lakes and rivers, we perfectly understand the importance of carefull and respectfull bahavior towards the Nature, for its resources. From the very beginning of our outdoor-activity we adopted rules of Leave No Trace technique - the standard of behavior of the person accepted in all the civilized world in relation to environment and especially - to the wild nature. After all on the relation of people to the nature near which they exist, itself can draw dalekoidushchy conclusions on the relation of these people to... Where and as we didn't travel - we don't reserve any garbage, we try to reduce whenever possible our influence on environment to a minimum. We clear earlier zagryazyonny tourist parking of the left garbage, we take out and we take out to utilization places that to us other people left there. We consider that only thus, at personal individual consciousness of each citizen, each tourist, climber or autotraveller, we will be able to keep the nature surrounding us in its state, natural, suitable for life, - in it pledge of the healthy future for ourselves and our children.
